Sporting Edition | Volume VIII, Issue II | 31 December, 1801

TITLE DECLARATIONS

Glasgow, Scotland: New holder of the World Heavyweight title Thomas Owen will be required to engage Ben Bryan and Tom Johnson in 1801. The pair are well past their prime and may well be pushed into retirement by the young and fit Mr. Owen. Owen handily defeated Johnson in 1800 and has yet to face Bryan save cross words in various pubs about London.

Middleweight king Jem Belcher will face Bill Wood and Spaniard Harris. Jem will have to bide his time as he awaits the arrival of worthy challengers at the middlin level.

1801 Heavyweight Rankings

OUT: Losses to Bill Jackling and first-timer Irishman Dunn have left Ben Stanyard on the outside looking in.

OUT: It has been a precipitous drop for Jack Bartholomew. Losses to a motley crew consisting of Jack Drake, Mr Fewterel and Bishop Blaize have left him persona non grata in London.

IN: Jack Cary is once again in the rankings following a year that saw him score a knockout over Jemmy Black.

IN: The once lowly Bishop Blaize is in following a surprising and triumphant 1801 with victories over Bill Dean, Fighting Grenadier and Jack Bartholomew.
