TO SCRATCH AGAIN

Chapel Row Level: World champion Benjamin Bryan and John Jackson met once again in June. This being the seventh meeting between the men with 2 drawn bouts and two wins apiece to show. An enormous gathering of nearly 4,000 took in the spectacle under a hot sun with gentlemen and roughians alike anticipating a great match. All were sorely disappointed.

Bryan offered a glimmer of a thrill when a cross knocked Jackson down in the third but it was fool's gold as the two grappled and pawed harmlessly for the remainder of the bout. Perhaps the pair is aging, perhaps they have become all to familiar with one another. Whatever the case may be, the public and Picayune have grown tired of the whole affair and wish to see new faces in these supposed world title tilts.  The referee rendered a fitting decision for two men that cannot decide a matter, five rounds for Jackson, five for Bryan and five even.

Other Doings:

Jack Bartholomew made slick third and fourth defenses of the English title that he has had in his possession since 1797. Bishop Blaize offered little resistance in January as Barty bloodied and made sport of him for a solid fifteen rounds. Tom Tring offered no more in Ealing three days prior to the Bryan / Jackson tussle as Jack knocked him down repeatedly en route to a fourteen-to-one round victory. The Picayune sincerely wishes for the young lad to get a chance at Big Ben in short order.
